31July | he is in kitty heaven
warning: do not read this if you are faint of heart and have a soft spot for feline creatures So - I was sitting at my desk tonight, which is right next to the window that overlooks my horribly overgrown garden, and through the music I had playing I started hearing an awful, strangled-sounding meowing noise. My heart jumped, and I nervously stopped my music. The meowing continued - it sounded like a poor, crying cat who was perhaps in excruciating pain. I turned my music back on in hopes of drowning it out - remembering the cat-baby we found in our basement last year, and his dead brother who stank up the apartment a couple days later - but whatever was torturing him only intensified and his incessant howling pierced through my music and, well, scared the crap out of me. Then suddenly there was one last excruciating, drawn out yelp, and then silence. And then I was depressed. :(
28July | interim
been running into a lot of thought lately - some good, and inspirational and exciting and rejuvenating, and some, well, not so good. i find myself constantly re-prioritizing but in ways that are better for me and help me move forward in what is turning out to be a somewhat tumultuous decade in my life. i've been contemplating shutting down bc.org - i don't think i'm ready for that though. i do want a change, something a little simpler and a little more representative of the subtleties of life and art. i'm home in jersey this weekend and took a long drive tonight - the air is damp and warm, thick with the familiar scent of moisture and nature. it reminds me of summers past - when time stood still and i was always in love with someone, something - surrounded by passion and friends, and carefree inanities. when i got in my car and the road never ended and i thought my heart would burst with contentment. take me back there, when everything was simpler.
26July | ils chantent les belles chansons
Hanson's The Walk was released on Tuesday. I won't write a long diatribe about them - I've done that time and again and I think you get the gist. I love them, they changed my life, I used to own way too much of their paraphernalia, etc etc. I will just say that they will forever remind me what music is to me. I will never stop hoping that the ignorant public will get over their own insecurities and explore them with an unbiased mind. I will probably always be a little disappointed in that aspect. They are my heart - and only those worth the chance to know that side of me would understand and respect that. The music lives-
21July | aahhh!!
silverchair is back! I had almost forgotten they existed. Talk about musical evolution, and another band who debuted at a young age and were pigeonholed forever forward. Appropriately, their new album Young Modern drops on Tuesday - same day as Hanson's new one. Give it a listen. I'm in love right now.
21July | a weekend with my loveliest
Two weekends ago I was graced with a lovely impromptu visit from Tatiana - she called on the 4th of July to see if the upcoming weekend would be a good time for her to come to NYC. I said, of course! We'd been talking about a visit before she moves back to Maryland to start grad school (she's getting a Masters in Museum Studies at GWU). I hadn't expected it to be so soon but I was certainly not complaining! I've recently started to actually read Time Out New York (yeah, yeah, I know. I've been a bad New Yorker what can I say) so I trolled through it looking for fun, free things for us to do that weekend. I came up with some fun places to eat (which of course included Blue Sky Bakery... I'll have to take pictures of those muffins sometime so you can see and drool), and also found a cupcake craft event! How timely! Cupcakes Takes the Cake is a blog - one of my new favorites no less - about cupcakes. The girls who run it post pictures of cupcakes and write about different cupcake shops around the country, and generally just love those delicious treats. (And how could you not?) Anyway more about that later. Tatiana arrived on Friday night so I took her to Quickly Shabu Shabu - we've been to Happy Shabu Shabu and Cafe various times but I'd read in TONY that Quickly was surprisingly good - and you get a free bubble tea with your meal. How can you beat that?? Well, the place is so adorable. Again, I didn't take pictures - oops! Well, go check it out yourself - I recommend the sour plum bubble tea. Saturday we slept in (well, for me. For Tati it seemed like a normal 11:00am wakeup time hehe), then got some sushi in my 'hood and headed off to Cupcakes Takes the Cake craft day! It was at Etsy Labs in Downtown Brooklyn - which was pretty funny because the previous night Tatiana had asked me if I'd ever heard of etsy.com and I said no... then we found out that the cupcake event was at Etsy Labs. Crazy! Anyway check out etsy.com, it's full of adorable, pretty things that you can buy. And if you make adorable, pretty things you can sell them too. We were the first ones at the lab, which was totally awesome because we got a private tour and complete control over the button-making station. We made loads and loads of buttons:
And everyone who came in later wanted to copy us. Some even stole the squares of fabric that I had cut out for my own use! Psh. Oh did I mention that they had free cupcakes from Crumbs?! Yum.
So, in talking to one of the girls who runs Etsy Labs, I found out that for $20/mo I can go to the labs as often as I want (it's open 7 days a week!) and use their machines and supplies, and get a discount on their classes. That place is like a minefield of crafts, let me tell you... so I'm planning to sign up as soon as I take care of some other expenses. After we left Etsy, we went extensively shopping at Macy's, got some groceries for our picnic on Sunday, then headed off to Zaytoons for dinner before seeing Knocked Up. Okay people - I don't know... seeing this movie perhaps proved to me that I am not a normal woman. In fact, I may be more of a guy. (But we may have already known this.) I really liked the movie but I couldn't help but leave feeling kind of discouraged that my gender is being represented by moody, manipulative psychos rather than level-headed human beings such as myself. Alas, perhaps my views will change when I'm pregnant. Anyway Sunday morning we woke up at 9:00 (which apparently is early for Tati... meanwhile it's later than I like to wake up on weekends) and got muffins at Blue Sky, then headed back to pack up and make a delicious picnic for lunch. I made my cucumber salad, as well as some vietnamese summer rolls and we ate at Washington Square Park before I sent Tati off to the bus! I have to say - that was two weekends ago, and since then a bunch has happened to really make me want to push myself toward more and more creative projects. I'm finding that I've become much more self-involved than before... hopefully not in a bad way, but just... knowing when to take time for me to condition my mind and soul. Does that make sense? I hate catch-up blogging so I'll end here :) And perhaps I will write again later tonight, or tomorrow. For now, I have to find some food, and maybe start reading Harry Potter...!!!
19July | i am cheating
this is not the post i promised. i'm just writing to tell my LJ friends that i wrote in my LJ. that is all. :)
16July | hi everyone
sorry i haven't written in forever! (that means you tati...) last week and this weekend have been a little hectic, for various reasons... some of which i'd prefer not to blog about, and some of which i have been meaning to blog about (again... tati!!). i will soon. i promise. really.
06July | i am sleepy and i have a cut on my finger
Well this has been a week of all weeks! Remember when I said that I didn't think there would be much work to do at work the rest of the week? I lied. I was hit pretty hard today and I already have stuff piling up in my head for tomorrow. :( On top of that, last week I cut my finger slicing a tomato and I thought I had properly disinfected it, but apparently I didn't because now the cut is puckered and tender. Poor finger! At least Friday is upon us, Tatiana's coming, and I found a super fun activity for us to do on Saturday that is FREE!!! Expect lots of pics from this weekend. I think I might go see Hanson at the end of the month. But I'm just going to slip in the back and watch from afar. Good plan, no? That's really all I can handle now, I think, after last time. Sleep time
04July | tell me does it move you?
I can't tell you how amazing it feels to just have everything fall into place for you. It's a sentiment that I wish everyone could experience, even if only for a moment. It doesn't necessarily mean that you have to have everything you want, or that all your problems are solved, or even that the people you love are near you. It is just this feeling of peace, that even though things aren't perfect, that they will be, because life continues to move, and my heart and mind are in the right place, and that what is important will soon sort itself out. Thinking back at the tornadoes and turmoil that surrounded me about six months ago, I am so relieved to be where I am now. And the best part is that I did it through my own volition (though not without the support of all of my friends!). I had a lovely 4th of July. It was very lowkey - I spent the morning and early afternoon working on a website for a client (love how official that sounds) with a break for a delicious homemade lunch, then headed out to a barbeque at... well... an old semi-flame's apartment. Becca joined me and got a glimpse of the weird former life I led before Digitas, and then a boy she's been seeing met up with us for drinks and sushi on Smith Street. Now I am home winding down and getting ready for work tomorrow. I mean - I know it's unavoidable to have the 4th of July fall on a Wednesday (every... six years?) but what a waste of time. There might be hardly any actual work to be done the rest of the week. Becca and I realized that on Friday she and I may be the only ones on our team who are actually in the office! BUT today I was surprised by a phone call from my darling Tatiana to ask me if this weekend might be convenient for her to come visit me!! Of course I said YES! And now my mind is all aflurry making plans of fun things for us to do! Yay!
